Rachel Monosov's Liminal Performance Goes Online

digital · 2026-04-27

Rachel Monosov (b. 1987, Saint Petersburg; based in Berlin) has released Liminal, an online performance commissioned by the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo, where she was a fellow in November and December 2019. For the first time, the institution asked for a completely new format to respond to pandemic restrictions. The work addresses social distancing and the pervasive digital dimension. Curated by Julia Trolp, the project was developed and filmed at Villa Massimo. Monosov is a multidisciplinary artist exploring alienation, territorial belonging, and identity. She holds two MFAs from KASK in Ghent and a BA from Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem. She co-founded CTG Collective and is represented by Catinca Tabacaru Gallery and Galleria Giorgio Galotti GRGLT. Her work has been shown at BOZAR, Dhondt-Dhaenens Museum, Kunsthaus Hamburg, Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Serlachius Museums, Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Villa Massimo, and three international biennials: 11th Bamako Biennale, 13th Dakar Biennale, and the Zimbabwe Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Block Museum at Northwestern University, and National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
