Rachel Labastie's 'Le sens de la peine' at La Terrasse, Nanterre
Rachel Labastie presents two works in the group exhibition 'Le sens de la peine' at La Terrasse contemporary art space in Nanterre, curated by Sandrine Moreau and Barbara Polla, from February 5 to May 28, 2016. The works are 'Les Cerveaux' (small whitish balls of wax and paraffin resembling brains) and 'Entrave collective' (a long chain in white porcelain). Labastie's practice emphasizes manual craftsmanship, drawing on her family's background as basket weavers and travelers. Her art resists security constraints and political oppression, echoing Picasso's view of painting as an offensive and defensive weapon. The exhibition is part of a broader program that also includes 'Céramix de Rodin à Schütte' at La Maison Rouge (March 10 – June 12, 2016) and 'De l’apparence des choses, Chapitre V' at Galerie Odile Ouizeman (March–April 2016).
