Race Across the World Winners Jo and Kush Inspire Former School

Jo Diop and Kush Burman, who emerged victorious in BBC's Race Across the World, have become inspirational figures at their alma mater, Calderstones School in Liverpool. Head teacher Lee Ratcliffe expressed immense pride in witnessing the 19-year-olds succeed in the series finale. As the youngest contenders in the 12,000km journey from Italy to Mongolia, they undertook the challenge without mobile phones. Ratcliffe has since incorporated their bravery and aspirations into school assemblies. The duo intends to invest their £20,000 prize in property, as both their mothers had been renters. During the two-month adventure, Kush faced difficulties following his stepfather Matt's suicide during the pandemic, with Jo providing crucial support. Their journey has been lauded for promoting healthy masculinity, with former safeguarding minister Jess Phillips emphasizing the importance of kindness. Calderstones student Ben remarked on their entertaining nature, and the school aims to have Jo and Kush speak at their awards evening, as former teacher Chris Spruce hailed them as exemplary role models for future students.
