Rabat to Host First Biennial Dedicated Exclusively to Women Artists in 2019
In April 2019, Rabat, Morocco, will launch the first edition of a biennial dedicated exclusively to contemporary artistic creation by women. Curated by Abdelkader Damani, director of the FRAC Centre-Val de Loire in Orléans, the multidisciplinary event will feature works by 20 to 30 female artists from Mediterranean countries, including dancers, actresses, and writers. The biennial aims to highlight women's roles in contemporary art history, particularly in the Arab world, and to boost Rabat's cultural profile. It will primarily take place at the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, with additional venues across the city. The program will be announced in October 2018, and the event will run for several months, recurring every two years. Funding comes from the National Museum Foundation (FNM) and private sources. Damani, an architect, art historian, and curator with experience at the 2014 Dakar Biennale and the 2017 Orléans Architecture Biennale, stated that art and culture 'have the potential to rewrite the world.'
