Rä di Martino on Her Film Controfigura at Venice Film Festival

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

Italian artist Rä di Martino presented her feature film Controfigura at the 74th Venice International Film Festival. The film is a re-elaboration of the 1968 film The Swimmer directed by Burt Lancaster, set in Marrakech instead of Los Angeles. Di Martino was drawn to the absurdity of the original film's failure and the interesting errors behind it. Controfigura stars Filippo Timi, Valeria Golino, and Corrado Sassi, the real stunt double used to test shots. The project also includes a book and an exhibition in Milan. Di Martino discussed her choice of Marrakech as a location, linking it to the crisis of Western man living as a stranger in a time of high tension. She described the film as a loop between documentary and fiction, seeking its own identity. Her next project, opening in late September in Milan, features a 3D model of Jerry from Tom and Jerry abandoned in a black desert on Lanzarote.
