R2A's Maison Bellon Camprubi: A Timber Home in Valais Designed to Evolve Across Generations

Sion-based architecture studio R2A has completed Maison Bellon Camprubi, a timber house on a former vineyard plot in the Anniviers Valley, Valais, Switzerland. The design prioritizes adaptability: a staircase serves as the key mechanism allowing the home to transform from a one-bedroom to a two-bedroom layout without structural changes. The house is organized in strata along the slope, with landings carved into the topography and openings framing specific views. A lower-level multi-purpose space is intended to become a self-contained apartment for a retired couple. The structure uses a load-bearing timber frame anchored in a concrete base, with visible joints and raw materials. Sustainability is achieved through passive solar gains, on-site rainwater infiltration, and a demountable, non-composite construction. The project recalls other Swiss timber architecture, such as Hello Wood's Remise Rosa in Zurich and GUCA Architektury's alpine cabin rebuild in Ingenbohl. The house presents a discreet, blackened timber exterior that reveals little from the road, with a rooftop patio offering panoramic views.
