Quilting Techniques Reimagined in Contemporary Art Exhibition at Dorsky Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Between April 11 and June 27, 2010, the Dorsky Gallery Curatorial Programs in Long Island City hosted an exhibition titled 'Assembling Narratives: Quilting Impulses in Contemporary Art,' which was curated by Donna Harkavy and Flavia S. Zúñiga-West. This showcase featured six artists who pushed the boundaries of quilting as an art form. Faith Ringgold displayed her 'story quilts' from the 1980s, such as the No More War Stories Quilt. Sabrina Gschwandtner crafted see-through quilts using 16mm film strips. Anna Von Mertens presented Dawn (Left Illinois for California, April 15, 1859), illustrating celestial movements. Donna Sharrett incorporated personal materials into large doilies, while John Sims explored African heritage with My Square Roots, collaborating with an Amish quilting group. The exhibition emphasized the significance of contemporary quilting in redefining art and enhancing craft practices.
