Queering Yerevan Collective and Nelli Sargsyan Discuss Feminist Methodology and Citation Politics

publication · 2026-04-19

Between December 15, 2016, and January 8, 2017, an email exchange took place between anthropologist Nelli Sargsyan and the Queering Yerevan Collective (QYC), focusing on feminist methodologies and the politics of citation. Sargsyan, who serves as an assistant professor at Marlboro College, was introduced to QYC's initiatives in 2009 through an article by Vahan Ishkhanyan. This led to her critique presented at a 2010 conference, which was analyzed by QYC members Shushan and Arpi. Their interaction encouraged further collaboration, resulting in the publication of "Queered: What’s To Be Done with xCentric Art." The dialogue also addresses a 2016 article that incorrectly identified QYC and examines citation as a form of feminist remembrance. Established in 2007, QYC is a collective of artists and activists in Yerevan advocating for innovative academic practices.
