Queens: A Cultural and Architectural Guide Beyond Manhattan

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York shifts the city's symbolic center toward the outer boroughs, with Queens emerging as a repository of layered cultural and architectural heritage. Flushing Meadows Corona Park preserves material from two World's Fairs: the Unisphere, a 36-meter stainless steel globe designed by Gilmore D. Clarke for the 1964 fair, built by the American Bridge Company (U.S. Steel division) with 560 tons of steel; and the New York State Pavilion by Philip Johnson with Richard Foster and engineer Lev Zetlin, comprising the Tent of Tomorrow, three observation towers (tallest at 76 meters), and the Theaterama. The Queens Museum houses the Panorama of the City of New York, commissioned by Robert Moses for the 1964-65 fair, built by Raymond Lester & Associates over three years. The Museum of the Moving Image, located in former Astoria Studios, holds over 130,000 artifacts and features the permanent exhibition Behind the Screen designed by Ali Höcek. The Noguchi Museum in Long Island City, founded by Isamu Noguchi in 1985, is the first US museum founded and designed by a living artist, featuring his sculptures and Akari lamps. The Louis Armstrong House in Corona, a National Historic Landmark since 1976, includes the Louis Armstrong Center (opened 2023) with over 60,000 documents and the multimedia installation Here to Stay curated by Jason Moran.
