Queen Camilla Returns Lost Roo Toy to Winnie-the-Pooh Collection at NYPL

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-01

During a state visit to the U.S., Queen Camilla returned a replica of Roo, a baby kangaroo toy missing since the 1930s, to the New York Public Library's collection of original Winnie-the-Pooh stuffed animals. The toys—Pooh, Kanga, Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger—were given to Christopher Robin Milne by his father A.A. Milne starting in 1921, toured the U.S. in the 1940s, and were donated to the NYPL in 1987. Roo was lost in an apple orchard in the 1930s. The new Roo was created by Merrythought, England's oldest surviving teddy bear manufacturer, using archival patterns. The visit also promoted Camilla's literacy campaign, with attendees including Sarah Jessica Parker, Amor Towles, and Anna Wintour. The Winnie-the-Pooh story collection will mark its 100th anniversary in October 2026.
