QuadroDesign Salone booth to become public bathroom in Zambia

architecture-design · 2026-04-17

Italian tapware brand QuadroDesign is sending its modular booth from Salone del Mobile 2026 to Masala, Zambia, where it will be rebuilt as the area's first public bathroom. Designed by Milanese architect Giacomo Moor, the timber-and-aluminum structure was conceived for disassembly and reuse. The bathroom will include changing rooms, toilets, showers with QuadroDesign plumbing, and a medical clinic, serving women working at the Masala charcoal market. The project was developed with Koalisation, an Italian NGO active in Zambia. QuadroDesign co-founder Enrico Magistro criticized the wastefulness of temporary fair stands. The booth's modular system uses four-way aluminum connectors and a timber frame with cavities for panels and lighting. After Salone, the structure was partially disassembled and adjusted in Moor's workshop—uprights were shortened by 50 cm for the lower Zambian building. Red-toned MDF panels will become internal partitions, fabric will be reused as privacy curtains, and a new roof will be built from local materials. Assembly in Zambia is planned over two weeks with the local community. The booth also showcased QuadroDesign's new Hum tapware by Philippe Malouin.
