QuadroDesign's Transformable Bathroom Installation at Salone del Bagno 2026 to Become Public Facility in Zambia

architecture-design · 2026-04-17

Italian design firm QuadroDesign will present a modular, transformable installation at the Salone Internazionale del Bagno from April 21-26, 2026, at Fiera Milano Rho. Designed by Giacomo Moor Studio, the stand features a lightweight wooden structure with special aluminum joints, allowing it to be disassembled, transported, and reconfigured. After the fair, the entire pavilion will be shipped to Zambia, where it will be converted into the first public bathroom for the Masala community by late August 2026. The project, initiated by Enrico Magistro and Elena Magistro, addresses the typical wastefulness of temporary exhibition architecture by creating a structure with a second life serving social needs. In Masala, near the local coal market, the facility will provide toilets, showers, and changing rooms for predominantly female workers who often lack adequate sanitation. Lighting by Platek is integrated into the infrastructure. Collaboration with Koalisation, a company active in carbon financing projects with direct presence in Zambia, facilitates the transformation into a complete infrastructure with walls, roof, and interior spaces. The project demonstrates how temporary architecture can evolve into permanent solutions, moving design from exhibition showcases to tangible territorial impact.
