Quadriennale Workshop in Rome Explores Artist-Curator Role Exchange
From July 3 to 5, 2018, the Fondazione Quadriennale di Roma hosted its inaugural Q-Rated workshop at Villa Carpegna in Rome, engaging 14 emerging curators and artists aged 21 to 32. The workshop, guided by Pierre Bal-Blanc, Elena Filipovic, and James Richards, examined the increasingly indistinct boundaries between artists and curators. Bal-Blanc drew on Charles Fourier's concept of "Phalanstère" and referenced his 2017 publication, along with his 2009 exhibition "The Death of the Audience." He pointed to figures like Franz Erhard Walther and Rasheed Araeen as illustrations of alternative roles. The subsequent workshop is scheduled for Lecce from September 25 to 27, featuring Zach Blas, Rana Hamadeh, and Robert Leckie, aiming to enrich discussions in contemporary art and outline the Italian art landscape.
