Qhapaq Ñan: Ancient Andean Road System Explored Through Contemporary Art at MUCIV
The exhibition "Qhapaq Ñan, Il grande cammino delle Ande" at MUCIV – Museo delle Civiltà in Rome explores the ancient Inca road system through contemporary art. Spanning over 30,000 kilometers across six South American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru), the Qhapaq Ñan was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014. The show, running until August 22, 2021, is promoted by IILA – Organizzazione internazionale italo-latino americana. Curated by Rosa Jijón in collaboration with Nuria Sanz, José de Nordenflycht, and Donatella Saviola, it features works by six artists: Gracia Cutuli (Argentina), Joaquín Sánchez (Bolivia), Cecilia Vicuña (Chile), Gabriel Vanegas (Colombia), Estefanía Peñafiel Loaiza (Ecuador), and Mariano León (Perù), plus documentary photographer Claudio Pérez. Archaeological artifacts from the Luigi Pigorini collection are also displayed. Antonella Cavallari, IILA Secretary General, emphasized the road's model of integration for modern infrastructure. Rosa Jijón highlighted cooperation as a legacy of the Qhapaq Ñan.
