Qatar's Sheikha Al-Mayassa Announces Art Basel Doha 2026 and Major Cultural Expansion

institutional · 2026-04-20

Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani revealed Art Basel will launch a fair in Qatar in February 2026, positioning art as a driver for social and economic development. Speaking in Basel, she emphasized art's role in addressing postcolonial identity crises and regional conflicts through cultural healing. As chair of Qatar Museums and the Doha Film Institute, she oversees over a dozen institutions including Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Islamic Art, and Wael Shawky's Fire Station. New projects include the Lusail Museum for Orientalist art designed by Herzog & de Meuron and a permanent Venice Biennale pavilion by architect Lina Ghotmeh. The Art Mill Museum will join Qatar's contemporary art portfolio alongside Rubaiya Qatar, a contemporary art quadrennial launching next year. Partnerships with Chilean and Argentinian institutions produced the LATINOAMERICANO exhibition at the National Museum of Qatar, featuring works by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Wifredo Lam. These initiatives support Qatar's 'National Vision 2030' economic diversification strategy, with plans for the region's largest art-storage facility aiming to reshape the global art landscape.
