Qatar's Museum Boom: Aravena, Herzog & Koolhaas Shape Doha's Cultural Future
Qatar is enhancing its cultural landscape with the introduction of three significant museums, all crafted by architects who have received the prestigious Pritzker Prize. The Art Mill Museum, designed by Alejandro Aravena, will serve as an 83,000-square-meter hub for contemporary art situated on the bay of Doha. Jacques Herzog’s Lusail Museum will feature the most extensive collection of Orientalist art over 52,000 square meters. Additionally, the Qatar Auto Museum, created by Rem Koolhaas, will extend 40,000 square meters along the Lusail Express Way. These new establishments will complement existing sites like the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum (19,000 sq m, Joan Sibina), Museum of Islamic Art (I.M. Pei, 2008), and National Museum of Qatar (Jean Nouvel, 2019). This initiative, overseen by Sheikha Al Mayassa, is set to launch preview exhibitions on October 24, ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
