Pussy Riot Members Confront Fictional Russian President in House of Cards Season 3
Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina of the feminist Russian art-punk collective Pussy Riot appeared as themselves in Season 3 of House of Cards. During a White House dinner scene, they directly challenged the fictional Russian President Viktor Petrov, a character resembling Vladimir Putin. The activists interrupted Petrov's speech to denounce his authoritarian policies before dramatically smashing their champagne glasses and exiting the event. Their departure was accompanied by Pussy Riot's new track "Don't Cry Genocide," which was co-written with the band Le Tigre. This television cameo follows earlier intersections between scripted series and contemporary art, such as a Sex and the City episode where characters attended a performance by fictional artist Aleksandr Petrovsky. That character was inspired by Marina Abramović's 2002 living installation The House with the Ocean View, presented at Sean Kelly gallery in New York. The House of Cards episode aired in 2015, marking another instance where popular media directly references real-world art figures and events.
