Pushkin Museum and Stella Art Foundation present Tintoretto-inspired show in Venice

exhibition · 2026-05-04

For the 58th Venice Biennale (May 11–November 24, 2019), the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts returns to Venice with a collateral exhibition titled "There is a Beginning in the End," co-organized with the Stella Art Foundation. The show marks the 500th anniversary of Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto, and will be held at the Church of San Fantin, reopening after restoration. Curated by Pushkin director Marina Loshak and Olga Shishko (head of Pushkin Museum XXI), the exhibition features site-specific works by Dmitry Krymov (Russia), Irina Nakhova (Russia), and Gary Hill (USA), alongside a Tondo by Emilio Vedova. Krymov creates a performative installation inspired by Tintoretto's Last Supper in San Trovaso; Nakhova presents a multimedia piece reinterpreting biblical stories through contemporary history; Hill deconstructs Tintoretto's paintings into sonic and luminous patterns. The !Mediengruppe Bitnik collective contributes a secret intervention inviting visitors to join a "Secret Brotherhood of Tintoretto." Stella Kesaeva, president of the Stella Art Foundation, noted this is the foundation's seventh Venice appearance, having represented Russia in three national pavilions. The show runs from May 11 to September 11, 2019.
