The literary industry is currently grappling with controversies surrounding artificial intelligence, leading publishers to create new guidelines. This past summer, Europa Content and Hodgman Literary retracted Jerry Falade's manuscript titled "Call Me, I'll Hide the Body" due to concerns about its authorship, despite securing multimillion-dollar agreements for a release in 2028. Falade refutes these claims. Additionally, Hachette scrapped Mia Ballard's "Shy Girl" following speculation about AI involvement; Ballard asserts that an editor utilized AI. Allegations of AI-assisted submissions also emerged in the Commonwealth Short Story Prize, including Jamir Nazir's "The Serpent in the Grove." Detection technologies are in development, with OpenAI's watermarking boasting 99.9% accuracy. A BookBub survey from 2025 revealed that 45% of authors employ generative AI, while 61% of readers favor works not generated by AI.
