Public Art Company's LA studio described as 'muppets on acid'

architecture-design · 2026-07-26

Public Art Company has completed a vibrant studio interior on Hyperion Avenue in Los Angeles, designed by founder Raffi Lehrer and his team. The space, which Lehrer set up in 2020, features a curtain system by Carlos Medellin in white, blue, grey, and orange that allows reconfiguration for meetings, parties, or open studio use. Drop-ceiling panels were replaced with polycarbonate sheets to expose the structure above, while cork tiles provide an acoustically optimized floor. A raised platform at the back houses Katie Stout's Pepita the Couch and a small pink lamp, alongside a NeuroWeave carpet by Güvenç Özel. The center contains a blue table and chair set by Matt Nichols. Green chairs by Bjarke Ingels for Fritz Hansen sit by a window adorned with text graphics by Ben Klevay, whose colorful paper typographic works also cover another wall. Sculptures by Misha Kahn, artworks by Julieta Gil, Kumkum Fernando, and Philip Mueller, and furniture including a desk and green candelabra built by Lehrer himself complete the eclectic environment. A friend described the interior as 'muppets on acid.' Photography is by Lance Gerber.
