Psychedelic gallery transformation 'Spaced Out' at Red Bull Studios challenges white cube conventions

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Between October 10 and December 14, 2014, 'Spaced Out: Migration to the Interior' was exhibited at Red Bull Studios in New York City, under the curation of Phong Bui and Rail Curatorial Projects. Situated at 220 West 18th Street, the gallery was transformed with striking colors and innovative materials. The ground floor was covered in vinyl tape by Jim Lambie, while a fluffy pink carpet graced the lower level. Walls painted in bright pink, turquoise, and yellow created a psychedelic atmosphere, effectively turning the gallery itself into a work of art. Notable artists included Peter Saul, Deborah Kass, Lisa Yuskavage, Robert Gober, Fred Tomaselli, and Will Ryman, drawing inspiration from Ken Johnson's 2011 exploration of psychedelic consciousness.
