PS1's 'Into Me/Out of Me' surveys bodily transgression with 132 artists
At PS1 Contemporary Art Center in Long Island City, Klaus Biesenbach, the Chief Curator, has curated the exhibition 'Into Me/Out of Me,' which will be on display until September 25, 2006. This showcase includes 132 artists who delve into themes of bodily intake and expulsion, featuring dedicated spaces for organs and substances such as vomit, bladder, and bowel. Influences from the past include the Viennese Actionists—Hermann Nitsch, Otto Mühl, Otmar Bauer, and Rudolph Schwarzkogler. Highlighted contemporary works are Damien Hirst's 'Each Day as it Comes' (2005) and Matthew Barney's 'Cremaster 3' (2002), alongside significant pieces like Chris Burden's self-crucifixion documentation, Marina Abramovic's 'Rest Energy' (1980), and Vito Acconci's 'Seedbed' (1972). The exhibition opened on the same day as the Pride rally, juxtaposing themes of pride with abjection.
