Protests Erupt as 2026 Venice Biennale Opens
On Tuesday, the 2026 Venice Biennale commenced amidst protests, with additional demonstrations scheduled for the week. Prior to the opening, there were calls for a boycott of the pavilions from Russia, Israel, and the US, along with the EU's decision to withdraw funding due to Russia's involvement and the resignation of the Biennale jury last week. At the Giardini, around 60 artists from 'In Minor Keys' presented 'Solidarity Drone Chorus,' inspired by Ahmed Muin's 'Drone Song,' to draw attention to issues of genocide and warfare. This performance will take place daily until May 8. The Art Not Genocide Alliance has organized a 24-hour strike on that date, culminating in a demonstration at 4:30 PM on Viale Garibaldi, where protests featured chants, banners, and Pussy Riot outside the Russian pavilion. The Latvian pavilion also initiated a campaign against Russia's participation.
