Proposed Italian Museum of Realism in Sulmona Sparks Debate

institutional · 2026-04-27

A proposal for the Museo Italiano del Realismo (MIR) in Sulmona, Abruzzo, has been introduced via regional legislation. If approved, it would be Italy's first museum dedicated to realism, following similar institutions in Germany (Mannheim), Russia (Zamoskvoreckye), and Spain (Almeria). The concept originated from critic Vittorio Sgarbi, who aims to revive a school of socially engaged figurative artists from the region, including Teofilo Patini (1840-1906), his pupil Rossetti, and others like La Civita, Alicandri, Giammarco, Di Renzo, and Bellei. The Abruzzo region would allocate €100,000 annually until 2023 to launch the initiative, with private partnerships through a special Fondazione MIR. The museum would host workshops to train cultural economists, managers, gallery operators, and scholars of Italian realism. Its collection would draw from works awarded the Premio Sulmona di Arti Figurative, as well as bequests and donations. The proposed venue is the 16th-century Palazzo Sardi, a monumental baroque palace in Sulmona's historic center. However, the proposal, sponsored by Lega regional councilor Antonietta La Porta, has stalled in committee. The center-right majority expects a favorable resolution soon, though critics fear it may become a political quid pro quo ahead of elections. Opponents also see it as a provincial challenge to the newly opened MAXXI L'Aquila, inaugurated by Minister Franceschini and President Giovanna Melandri.
