Proposal to name Rome's future Science City after Piero Angela

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

A proposal has been made to dedicate Rome's planned Città della Scienza (Science City) to the late Piero Angela, the beloved Italian science communicator who died in August 2022. The article, published on Artribune, argues that Angela's lifelong mission to promote scientific education and rational thinking makes him the ideal namesake for the long-awaited museum. Rome remains the only European capital without a major science museum, despite decades of proposals. The current project, backed by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri's administration, plans a 10,000-square-meter facility in the Flaminio district at the former Guido Reni barracks and military electronics plant. Nobel laureate physicist Giorgio Parisi is reportedly part of the organizing committee. The article traces the history of failed attempts, including Paolo Portoghesi's 1983-85 design for a 'Città della Scienza e della Tecnica' at the former Mattatoio del Testaccio, and later proposals for via Giulia and the Ostiense-Gazometro area. It also highlights the role of Alberto Angela, Piero's son and intellectual heir, whose 1988 book 'Musei (e mostre) a misura d'uomo' analyzed the lack of science museums in Italy. The article concludes that naming the museum after Piero Angela would be a fitting memorial to his legacy.
