Project Native Informant exhibition explores gender, domesticity and technology through six artists
Project Native Informant in London presented an exhibition from November 2 to December 9, 2017, featuring nine works by six artists examining gender, domesticity, and technology. Lynn Hershman Leeson's 1996 print Digital Venus #1: After Titian overlays Titian's Venus of Urbino with circuit board imagery, created a year before the first Cyberfeminist International. Vikky Alexander contributed two mid-2000s digital-collages on canvas, Rising River (2006) and Green Lake (2007), depicting sterile domestic interiors with bodies of water visible through windows. Ad Minoliti showed two 2017 works from the Queer Deco series displayed against an orange wall vinyl titled Puppy, replacing human figures with geometric forms. DIS presented Sleep Mode (2017), a video installation mimicking cable TV channel hopping played from a full-scale double bed. Aleksandra Domanović and Wang Newone also participated in the sparse exhibition, which was reviewed in the January & February 2018 issue of ArtReview. The show prompted consideration of historical positions on technology and gender, with works ranging from Hershman Leeson's early cyberfeminist exploration to more contemporary examinations of domestic space.
