Progress Report's 'The Working Title' Showcases 32 Abstract Artists at Bronx River Art Center

Progress Report, the curatorial project of Vince Contarino and Kris Chatterson, organized 'The Working Title' at the Bronx River Art Center from March 25 to April 29, 2011. The exhibition featured 32 abstract artists, primarily painters, presenting a diverse range of approaches without a unified argument. Located at 305 East 140th Street #1A in the Bronx, New York, the show was open Wednesday through Friday from 3:00 to 6:30 pm and Saturdays from 12:00 to 5:00 pm. Notable works included Pamela Jorden's 'Echo Music' (2010), Matthew Deleget's 'Shuffle (for Grandmaster Flash)' (2011), Tisch Abelow's 'Untitled (very tizdayle)' (2009), and Joy Curtis's 'St. Virga' (2010). Other artists featured were Inna Babaeva, Letha Wilson, Stacy Fisher, E. J. Hauser, Britton Tolliver, Keltie Ferris, Cordy Ryman, and Dennis Hollingsworth. The curators avoided artists adhering to 'romantic sentimentality,' instead focusing on pictorial strategies and empirical attitudes. Three-dimensional works like Babaeva's 'More Than You Think' (2011) and Wilson's 'Double Dip' (2009) engaged with pictorial space. The exhibition reflected skepticism toward the high seriousness of mid-20th-century abstraction, embracing variety over a cohesive thesis.
