Privateview Gallery Opens in Turin with Antonis Donef Solo Show
A new 250-square-meter gallery called Privateview has opened in Turin's San Salvario district, housed in a former wine shop with ground floor and basement spaces. The gallery is run by young collectors Silvia Borella and Mauro Piredda, who were inspired by their travels, particularly in London, where they connected with artists and gallerists. Privateview aims to promote young Italian artists abroad and introduce foreign talents little known in Italy but already represented by important galleries in America and England. The inaugural exhibition features Greek artist Antonis Donef from Athens, curated by Flaminio Gualdoni, who wrote the critical text. Donef's works involve a multi-step creative process starting from books—especially encyclopedias and ancient repertoires—which he collects, accumulates, studies, and then excerpts to build his visual scores of light ink strokes and symbolic figuration. Gualdoni cites Henri Michaux to explain Donef's method: "Books are boring to read. No free circulation. Quite different is the painting: immediate, total. To the left, so, to the right, in depth, at will. In a moment everything is there. Everything, but nothing is yet known. It is here that we must begin to READ." The exhibition runs from May 26 to July 30, 2016, at Privateview Gallery, Via Goito 16, Turin, open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm.
