Private Donation of €800,000 for Leonardo's Last Supper in Milan
The Bonomi family, through the Investindustrial Foundation, has donated €800,000 for the renovation and enhancement of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper in Milan. This private contribution supplements €1 million from the Italian Ministry of Culture, bringing the total project budget to €1.8 million. The project, developed in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano, aims to rationalize visitor flows, enhance the garden, and create a new covered and climate-controlled space adjacent to the Refectory for group reception and educational workshops, without interfering with the historic structure. The work is scheduled to start after June 30, 2025, and conclude by the end of 2026, in line with the PNRR timeline. The Last Supper, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1980, was painted by Leonardo between 1494 and 1498 using an experimental technique that makes it particularly fragile. Previous conservation efforts include a €700,000 contribution from Eataly in 2018 for ventilation system restoration, and restoration and visitor flow reorganization in 2021. The Bonomi family has a long history of philanthropy in Milan, notably through Anna Bonomi Bolchini, who founded the 'Le Carline' institute for girls, and Andrea Bonomi, founder of Investindustrial, whose foundation has allocated over €30 million in ten years for education, environment, and cultural heritage.
