Private Collections Shape Malaysian Art Scene Amid Political Turmoil
The exhibition titled 'Not Just in Black and White' has recently wrapped up at the GDP Campus in Kuala Lumpur, showcasing 76 pieces from the collection of retired plastic surgeon Steve Wong. Curated by Rogue Art, the display highlighted Malaysian contemporary art from the 1990s onward, addressing sociopolitical issues. Notable works included Minstrel Kuik's 2017 charcoal depiction of Bersih rally scenes and Yee I-Lann's 2007 digital print focused on protest movements. This event was one of three significant private collection exhibitions in Kuala Lumpur this year, alongside Ng Sek San's 'Strategies of Dissent' and Pakhruddin Sulaiman's 'Tubuh'. Meanwhile, the Ilham gallery continues its operations with 'Titik Garis Bentuk: Drawing as Practice', despite the seizure of Ilham Tower by anti-graft officials in December 2023.
