Prison Photography and Poetic Escapes: Carnavalet and Gutharc Exhibitions
The exhibition 'L'Impossible Photographie. Prisons parisiennes (1851-2010)' at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris highlights prison-related photography spanning from 1851 to 2010. This collection, curated from numerous images, features 19th-century depictions of Haussmann's Paris by Charles Marville, as well as vacant cells from the early 20th century and Henri Manuel's photographs of female prisoners' rehabilitation taken between 1924 and 1930. The 1970s marked the emergence of the GIP, established by Michel Foucault, which led to revealing works by Raymond Depardon and others. Modern photographers such as Mathieu Pernot and Jacqueline Salmon document the realities of incarceration. The exhibition is open from February 9 to July 4, 2010. Additionally, Galerie Alain Gutharc will showcase Jessica Backhaus, Laurent Goumarre, and Guillaume Pilet from June 5 to July 31, 2010.
