Prison art projects in Milan and Rome showcase inmate photography and street art
Two prison-themed art projects have opened in Milan and Rome. In Milan, the PAC presents 'Ri-Scatti. Per me si va tra la perduta gente,' the eighth edition of a social photography exhibition curated by Diego Sileo, running until November 9. The show features over 800 photographs and videos created by 100 participants—inmates and prison police from four Milanese detention facilities (Opera, Bollate, F. Di Cataldo, and C. Beccaria)—after an 11-month course. Proceeds from sales of prints and the Silvana Editoriale catalog will fund architectural improvements in prisons. In Rome, the project 'Disegna le tue idee – L’arte non ha sbarre,' organized by LiberaMente and winner of the Regione Lazio Vitamina G grant, is part of the MArteLive Biennale. Over eight months, weekly workshops with young female inmates at Rebibbia prison produced drawings that three street artists—Jorit, Moby Dick, and Barbara Oizmud—are turning into murals, to be completed by October 25. Two murals are inside the prison; Jorit's mural at Quarticciolo honors Marielle Franco, the Brazilian politician and activist assassinated on March 14, 2018.
