Prinz Gholam's 'While Being Other' at Mattatoio, Rome

The Mattatoio in Rome presents 'While Being Other', an exhibition by the artist duo Prinz Gholam, as part of Angel Moya Garcia's three-year program 'Dispositivi Sensibili'. The duo, composed of Wolfgang Prinz and Michel Gholam—winners of the 2020/2021 Premio Roma Villa Massimo—has developed a performative practice for twenty years, focusing on bodily gestures that reinterpret diverse cultural references from ancient paintings to contemporary media. Their work often takes place in historically significant sites like museums and archaeological locations, using masks to emphasize a tribal tone. The exhibition at Padiglione 9B expands their research on self-perception and the body as cultural constructs through performances, objects, and large drawings. The drawings feature figures in dynamic poses with warm and cool nuances, while large wall works serve as slides of performances animating the central corridor. A large installation of small masks covers angular walls, presenting faces in various expressions, inviting viewers to lose themselves in details.
