Printed Matter Celebrates 50 Years with Gala at High Line Hotel

Printed Matter, the nonprofit artists' bookstore and publisher, celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala at the High Line Hotel in New York on Tuesday night. Founded in 1976 in Tribeca by Sol LeWitt, Pat Steir, and Lucy Lippard, the organization has grown into a bookstore, exhibition space, and organizer of one of the world's largest book fairs. The event honored Ed Ruscha and Yusuf Hassan of BlackMass Publishing, with speeches by Joan Jonas and Elyse Benenson. Guests included artists Michael Heizer, Glenn Ligon, Tauba Auerbach, Claudia Rankine, Neil Jenney, Lele Saveri, Martha Wilson, Derek Fordjour, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, and Adam Pendleton, as well as MoMA Director Christophe Cherix, Larry Gagosian, MoMA PS1 Director Connie Butler, and dealer Carolina Nitsch. Performances by Lucinda Childs and Anton Batagov marked the 50th anniversary of Robert Wilson and Philip Glass's opera Einstein on the Beach. Party favors included pins with Ed Ruscha's catalog numbers and handmade leather bookmarks.
