Prince Harry and claimants face millions in legal costs after losing Daily Mail privacy case

The Duke of Sussex, along with other prominent plaintiffs, is facing a potential legal expense of millions after losing their High Court privacy lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), the publisher of the Daily Mail. Among the claimants are Sir Elton John, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, and Elizabeth Hurley. Judge Mr Justice Nicklin dismissed their allegations of illegal information gathering following an 11-week trial. During a two-day hearing on costs that began Wednesday, the claimants' attorneys referred to ANL's costs, which reached nearly £34.5 million as of 9 July, as "eye watering," asserting that the publisher exceeded the authorized costs by over £18.6 million. While the claimants possess insurance coverage of £16.2 million, the court was informed that this would fall short of covering their overall cost exposure by potentially millions. ANL contends that the claimants should bear full costs on an indemnity basis, citing unreasonable behavior throughout the proceedings. In response, the claimants' lawyers argue they acted in good faith and that requiring them to pay full costs would be both unjust and personally detrimental.
