Primary Architects completes timber workshop reviving rural craft in China's Henan province

Primary Architects has finalized the Carpenter's Home, a 405-square-meter timber workshop and community education facility located in Haotang Village, Henan Province, China. This initiative is part of the village's 'Eight Traditional Crafts Revival Program' and replaces an old woodworking shed previously utilized by local carpenter Zhang. The design showcases a dramatic roof supported by twelve curved glued-laminated timber beams that extend from east to west, mirroring the nearby mountains. Curved skylights, designed through sunlight simulations, enhance natural illumination during the day. The hybrid timber-and-steel framework spans up to 26 meters without internal supports. The open layout facilitates research workshops and educational sessions for two school classes, while the ground floor maintains traditional woodworking and hosts exhibitions. A tea room upstairs serves as a communal space. The project, spearheaded by chief architects Xiang Huang and Songyan Mao, seeks to bridge craftsmanship with modern rural life, fostering labor, education, and community engagement.
