Previously Unseen E.H. Shepard Winnie-the-Pooh Drawings Emerge for Centenary

market-auction · 2026-04-17

For the first time ever, two original sketches by E.H. Shepard for the 1926 Winnie-the-Pooh edition are now being showcased at Peter Harrington Rare Books in London. Each drawing is priced at £9,000 ($12,200) and depicts scenes from A.A. Milne's stories that were never completed. One sketch shows Christopher Robin leading Pooh, Piglet, and Owl on an "expotition," while the other illustrates Pooh and Piglet chasing Woozles. Philip Errington from Peter Harrington highlights their significance as they represent "the first moment of inspiration." The exhibit also features other noteworthy Shepard illustrations, including a £30,000 ($40,700) piece from The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Shepard's artwork was largely donated to the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1969 and has been previously displayed. Later this month, Peter Harrington will present Pooh drawings at the New York International Antiquarian Book Fair.
