Prefabricated Homes: The Future of Living in Compact, Relocatable Modules

The book 'Nomadic Living – Relocatable Residences', curated by German architect Sibylle Kramer and published by Braun Publishing in October 2017, explores the future of housing through over 40 examples of transportable private homes and compact smart living prototypes. The selected models reflect a concept of home not yet widespread in Italian society, but could encourage development of emergency housing due to Italy's seismic fragility. The volume also examines 'tiny houses' for their sustainable materials and versatile use. International examples include ONE+ modules by Swedish company Add a Room with Danish architect Lars Frank Nielsen, customizable via a Builder App; the ÁPH80 transportable house by Ábaton Arquitectura with Batavia interior design, featuring three functional areas in 27 sqm; and the Winter Cabin on Mount Kanin near Bovec, Slovenia, by OFIS Arhitekti, a mountain refuge for up to nine climbers accessible only on foot or by helicopter. In Italy, the Inhabits – Milano Design Village event during Fuorisalone 2018 showcased living units, including Livingmodule by OFIS Arhitekti with C+C, C28, AKT II, and contractor Permiz, a 10 sqm minimal cell aggregable vertically, suitable for temporary housing or emergency contexts.
