Pre-Raphaelite Masterpieces Dialogue with Italian Old Masters in Forlì

exhibition · 2026-04-26

In spring 2024, Forlì's Museo Civico San Domenico will present a significant exhibition dedicated to the Pre-Raphaelites, showcasing 320 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, and furniture. This display contrasts 19th-century Pre-Raphaelite creations with the works of 40 Italian Old Masters, such as Cimabue, Giotto, and Botticelli, who served as their inspiration. Curator Cristina Acidini highlights the impact of Titian and Palma il Vecchio on the Pre-Raphaelite concept of beauty. The exhibition will delve into the history of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, established in 1848 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, and William Holman Hunt, while also examining John Ruskin's advocacy for Italian art and the contributions of women, including models and artists like Elizabeth Siddall and Christina Rossetti.
