Pre-Conceptual Artworks from the 1960s at Galerie Jocelyn Wolff

exhibition · 2026-05-01

Galerie Jocelyn Wolff presents a group exhibition of works predating 1966, the official birth year of Conceptual art, featuring artists including William Anastasi, George Brecht, Stanley Brouwn, Yoko Ono, Franz Erhard Walther, and Peter Roehr. The show traces pre-conceptual tendencies such as language use, process, tautology, dematerialization, and authorship critique. Highlights include Yoko Ono's 'Waterdrop Painting' (1961), Stanley Brouwn's pedestrian route drawings, and George Brecht's 'Events' (1962). Rare historical works are central: a 'Wortbild' by Franz Erhard Walther from 1957-1958, and two reactivated pieces by William Anastasi—'Microphone' (1963-2010), a tape recorder playing its own blank tape, and 'Sink' (1963-2010), a metal slab that rusts when moistened. Peter Roehr's serial alignments of consumer materials are also featured. The exhibition contextualizes works by younger gallery artists Guillaume Leblon and Élodie Seguin, who pay homage to Yves Klein and On Kawara. The show runs from November 12 to December 23, 2010, and is curated by Marie-Cécile Burnichon.
