Pratiques n°20 explores moving images and their boundaries
The 20th issue of Pratiques, subtitled 'Les images mouvantes', is reviewed by Laurent Buffet in art press n°364 (February 2010). Published by Presses universitaires de Rennes, the issue examines the relationship between cinematic moving images and still images, poetry, and philosophy. Alexander Streitberger analyzes contemporary works through the concept of the rebus, while Ada Ackerman revisits Eisenstein's film adaptation project of Marx's Capital, showing how he used montage to 'screen concepts' inspired by Daumier's caricatures. The issue also addresses the migration of images between cinema and exhibition spaces. Victor Burgin, following Greenberg, emphasizes video's specificity against cinematic modes, while Dork Zabunyan and Patrick Javault highlight formal and theoretical similarities. Bruno Elisabeth resolves this tension by showing that many contemporary art devices have equivalents in cinema's prehistory.
