Prague Exhibition 'This Month I Menstruate' Revisits Feminist Art Strategies in 2004

exhibition · 2026-04-19

From March 3 to March 19, 2004, the Gallery Art Factory in Prague presented the exhibition 'This Month I Menstruate,' organized by the Center for Gender Studies. Featuring twenty-six artists, such as Barbora Baronova and Rita Marhaug, the event aimed to ignite conversations about gender issues within Czech society, as noted by sociologist Jirina Siklova. An orange banner in Wenceslas Square advertised the exhibition, which drew inspiration from the 1972 'Womanhouse' project and included lectures and film screenings. While it highlighted women's reproductive power, it overlooked masculinity. Noteworthy works included Marhaug's photographs and Klodova's installation. A review pointed out the emphasis on biological functions rather than the political dimensions of gender differences, highlighting Czech society's relative openness to sexuality compared to the U.S.
