Prado's Winter Season: Clara Peeters, Ribera, Maestro Mateo, and Metapainting

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Museo del Prado in Madrid presents four winter exhibitions. The first-ever monographic show on Clara Peeters features 15 still lifes by the 17th-century Dutch Baroque painter, known for her detailed depictions of material culture and hidden self-portraits in reflective surfaces. 'Ribera, maestro del disegno' showcases 50 drawings by Jusepe de Ribera, accompanied by paintings and prints, highlighting his independent graphic work and pre-Goyaesque interest in popular types. 'Maestro Mateo, príncipe de la escultura románica' reunites 14 sculptural fragments from the Portico de la Gloria in Santiago de Compostela, including eight surviving column-statues from the original west façade. 'Metapintura. El arte reflexiona sobre sí misma,' curated by Javier Portús, examines art's self-reflection through 137 works from the 16th to 19th centuries, paying homage to Cervantes' Don Quixote and Velázquez's Las Meninas. The exhibitions run until February 19, 2017 (Peeters, Ribera, Metapintura) and March 26, 2017 (Maestro Mateo).
