Prado Museum Unveils New Galleries and the Dauphin's Treasure

exhibition · 2026-05-04

In anticipation of its bicentennial in 2019, the Museo del Prado in Madrid has revamped its permanent collection, expanding public exhibitions by 10 percent. The renovation, led by architect Juan de Villanueva, introduced seven additional galleries (rooms 76–84) on the second floor, featuring Flemish and Dutch masterpieces from the 16th and 17th centuries, including notable artists like Rubens, Brueghel, Snyders, Peeters, Teniers, and Rembrandt, along with Dutch landscapes. For the first time, the museum showcases the complete Treasure of the Dauphin in a newly designed circular room (79B), displaying 144 decorative art pieces from antiquity to the 17th century, enhanced by interactive technology from Samsung and original leather cases from Milanese workshops.
