Prado Museum mounts first major retrospective of Mariano Fortuny
The Museo del Prado in Madrid has launched its inaugural extensive retrospective dedicated to Mariano Fortuny, a 19th-century Catalan artist acclaimed as the most distinguished Spanish painter following Goya and preceding Picasso. Curated by Javier Barón, the exhibition comprises 169 pieces sourced from various global collections, with around thirty originating from the Prado itself. It traces Fortuny's formative years in Rome and presents a wide array of his creations, including oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints. The exhibition also emphasizes his enthusiasm for collecting Hispano-Islamic artifacts and features photographs by Filippo Belli from the Museo Fortuny in Venice. This showcase will be available until March 18, 2018.
