cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

The Museo del Prado in Madrid has released Memoria Audiovisual, a free online collection of over 400 audiovisual archives spanning more than 100 years of the museum's history, as part of its bicentennial celebrations. The project, developed in collaboration with the Filmoteca Española and Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) with private support, includes early art documentaries such as Basilio Martín Patino's Introducción al Museo del Prado (1985) and pioneering shorts like Velázquez (1937) by Ramón Barreiro, La mitología en el Prado: Rubens (1948) by José María Elorrieta, Il Paradiso Perduto (1948) by Luciano Emmer and Enrico Gras, and Goya en el Museo del Prado by José A. Sobrino. The archive is organized into two sections: El Museo como escenario, focusing on the building's history and its visitors, and El Museo como inspiración, featuring didactic films such as Prado Vivo (1965) by Ramón Masats and Tres horas en el Museo del Prado (1968) directed by Jesús Fernández Santos. The initiative complements the major exhibition Museo del Prado 1819-2019. Un lugar de memoria, which traces the institution's history. Events began in 2018 and continue through 2019.
