Prado Museum Enhances Visitor Experience During Pandemic with El Greco Exhibition and Bosch Gallery Upgrade

The Museo del Prado in Madrid has leveraged reduced visitor numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic to implement significant improvements and new exhibitions. Since reopening on June 6, 2020, the museum has introduced a temporary exhibition of five masterpieces by El Greco from Illescas, on view until February 28, 2021. These works, painted between 1600 and 1603 for the Hospital de la Caridad in Illescas, include two altarpieces (a portrait of San Ildefonso and the Virgin of Charity) and three circular canvases (Annunciation, Nativity, and Coronation of the Virgin). The museum has also transformed Room 56A into the Bosch Gallery, dedicated to Hieronymus Bosch, featuring six paintings including the triptychs The Garden of Earthly Delights, The Haywain, and The Adoration of the Magi. New metal supports with advanced technology allow closer viewing and include fireproof blankets for emergency protection, a first in museum conservation. Samsung, the museum's technology partner, has installed a screen displaying animated details of Bosch's works and launched the first official Prado guide app for Android and iOS, updated to 2020 with commentary on over 400 works.
