Prado Museum Documentary on Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights Hits Theaters

publication · 2026-05-05

The Museo del Prado has produced a 90-minute documentary, 'El Bosco. El jardín de los sueños', directed by José Luis López-Linares, to mark the fifth centenary of Hieronymus Bosch. The film focuses exclusively on Bosch's triptych 'The Garden of Earthly Delights', using extreme close-ups to explore its details. It features commentary from a range of international intellectuals, artists, and musicians, including writers Cees Nooteboom, Salman Rushdie, Orhan Pamuk, and Nélida Piñon; musicians William Christie, Renée Fleming, and Ludovico Einaudi; and artists Miguel Barceló, Isabel Muñoz, Cai Guo-Qiang, and José Manuel Ballester. The project was conceived by art historian Reinaert Falkenberg, who also narrates. The documentary premiered in Spanish cinemas on June 9, 2016, with subsequent releases in other European countries, including Italy, and the United States. It was produced in collaboration with Lopez-Li Films, with support from BBVA Foundation, Movistar+, and Spanish Radio Television (RTVE). The film aims to stimulate discussion about the painting, which Falkenberg believes was originally intended as a conversation piece at the court of Nassau. Shot in Spain and the Netherlands, the documentary includes a soundtrack mixing classical, rock, and pop music, featuring Einaudi's 'Passaggio' from his album 'Le Onde'.
