Prado Museum commissions animated video bringing masterpieces to life

digital · 2026-05-04

Rino Stefano Tagliafierro, co-founder of Milan-based studio Karmachina, has created a new animated video titled Belleza y Locura for the Museo del Prado in Madrid, commissioned for the museum's bicentennial. The film animates thirty paintings from the collection, including El jardín de las delicias by Hieronymus Bosch, Las meninas by Diego Velázquez, Las tres gracias by Peter Paul Rubens, and El muchacho sentado by Manzano y Mejorada. Produced by El País Semanal, which published a feature on the project, the video explores themes of beauty and madness. Tagliafierro stated: 'The key is to tell a story, to bring out hidden emotions, maintaining a balance between the original works and my intervention.' The project follows his earlier success with Beauty, a short film that animated historical artworks five years prior.
