Prado Exhibition Explores Medieval Jewish-Christian Relations Through Art

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Museo del Prado in Madrid has launched 'Lo specchio perduto. Ebrei e convertiti nella Spagna medievale' (The Lost Mirror: Jews and Converts in Medieval Spain), which will be on display until January 14, 2024. Curated by Joan Molina, this exhibition explores the influence of sacred imagery on the relationships among Christians, Jews, and converts from 1285 to 1492, the year of the Jewish expulsion from Castile and Aragon. Recognized by ArtNet as one of the top 15 European exhibitions of the autumn, it showcases approximately 70 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, and manuscripts from notable collections like the British Library and Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Key works include the Golden Haggadah and pieces by Bartolomé Bermejo and others. The exhibition is divided into five sections, ending with 'The Scenography of the Inquisition,' which features Berruguete's 'Auto da fé presided over by Santo Domingo de Guzmán.' A catalog edited by Molina will accompany the exhibition, which is set to move to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona in February.
